Mandalay: Where the Classic Cruise Begins

A Mandalay river cruise starts in Burma’s last royal capital, founded by King Mindon in the 1850s, and in the older capitals that cluster around it on both banks of the Irrawaddy. The city itself is busy and modern; the reasons to linger are the monasteries, the craft workshops and the hill that overlooks it all.

Where things stand (October 2026): the U.S. State Department rates Burma (Myanmar) Level 4: Do Not Travel — its highest level — citing civil unrest and armed conflict, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, poor medical care and land mines (U.S. State Department Burma travel advisory, issued May 8, 2026). The large U.S.-market river lines are not selling the Mandalay–Bagan run, and Pandaw’s Irrawaddy sailing calendar showed no Rangoon–Mandalay departures when we checked. This site explains the route so you know what it involves; please read the advisory before you plan anything.

Sights on a Mandalay Program

  • Mandalay Hill — covered stairways and pagodas up to a viewpoint over the city and the river.
  • Kuthodaw Pagoda — 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist scripture, each in its own small shrine, often called the world’s largest book.
  • Mahamuni Pagoda — home to a revered seated Buddha covered by pilgrims with layers of gold leaf.
  • Shwenandaw Monastery — a carved teak building that once stood inside the royal palace.
  • Craft quarters — gold-leaf beaters, wood carvers and stone carvers at work.

Amarapura and the U Bein Bridge

South of the city, Amarapura was briefly the royal capital before Mandalay. Its U Bein Bridge, made of teak posts and planks salvaged from an earlier palace, crosses Taungthaman Lake for more than a kilometer and is one of the most photographed places in Burma, especially at sunset when small boats gather below it. Morning visits often included a large monastery where monks file out for their meal.

Mandalay After the 2025 Earthquake

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025 struck near Sagaing and Mandalay. Mandalay suffered heavy damage and loss of life, and the old Ava Bridge over the Irrawaddy collapsed into the river. Some monuments on a classic Mandalay river cruise program were damaged; anyone planning a visit should expect closures and repair work and ask a local operator what is open.

Upstream and Downstream From Mandalay

From Mandalay, the classic itineraries ran downstream to Bagan in three or four nights, or upstream past Mingun toward the gorges and Bhamo on rarer expedition sailings. The river towns closest to the city — Sagaing, Ava and Mingun — are covered on our river towns page. The ships that once sailed here are described on Irrawaddy Cruises.
