Bagan River Cruise
Thousands of temples on a plain beside the Irrawaddy.
Ask About Temple River CruisesWhy Bagan Is the Heart of the Route
A Bagan river cruise ends, or begins, at one of Asia’s great archaeological landscapes: a dry plain on the east bank of the Irrawaddy covered with thousands of Buddhist temples, stupas and monasteries, most of them built while Bagan was the capital of the first Burmese kingdom. UNESCO’s Bagan listing describes it as the largest surviving concentration of its kind in the region.
Where things stand (October 2026): the U.S. State Department rates Burma (Myanmar) Level 4: Do Not Travel — its highest level — citing civil unrest and armed conflict, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, poor medical care and land mines (U.S. State Department Burma travel advisory, issued May 8, 2026). The large U.S.-market river lines are not selling the Mandalay–Bagan run, and Pandaw’s Irrawaddy sailing calendar showed no Rangoon–Mandalay departures when we checked. This site explains the route so you know what it involves; please read the advisory before you plan anything.
Temples Worth Knowing by Name
Ananda
A great white temple with four standing Buddhas facing the four directions; one of the most revered shrines on the plain.
Thatbyinnyu
One of the tallest temples in Bagan, its upper terraces visible from far across the plain and from the river.
Htilominlo
A late red-brick temple known for surviving plaster carvings on its exterior.
Shwezigon
A gilded stupa near Nyaung-U and an important pilgrimage site, busy at festival times.
Bupaya
A small gourd-shaped stupa right on the riverbank — the one you see from the deck.
Dhammayangyi
The most massive structure on the plain, with famously precise brickwork.
A Typical Day in Bagan From a Ship
River cruise programs in Bagan were built around the light. Early starts caught sunrise over the temples; the hot middle of the day went to a lacquerware workshop, a market in Nyaung-U or a rest on board; the afternoon brought one or two more temples and a sunset viewpoint before dinner back on the ship.
Ships usually spent a full day or two here, sometimes with an evening on deck watching the plain turn orange. Hot-air balloon flights over the temples were a popular optional extra in the cool season.

Damage and Restoration
Bagan sits in an active earthquake zone. A strong quake in 2016 damaged many temples, and restoration work has been going on ever since. The March 28, 2025 earthquake centered near Mandalay and Sagaing was also reported to have damaged historic structures in Bagan, though less severely than in the Mandalay–Sagaing area. Expect scaffolding and closures at some monuments.
Getting the Most From Bagan on a Bagan River Cruise
- Bring a scarf or light layer to cover shoulders, and shoes you can slip off quickly — you remove them at every temple.
- Carry water and sun protection; there is very little shade between monuments.
- Ask your guide to include one quiet, lesser-known temple alongside the famous ones.
- Buy lacquerware directly from workshops, where you can see how it is made.
If Bagan is out of reach for now, the temples of Angkor near Siem Reap are the natural alternative and are on most Mekong itineraries; Asia River Cruises explains how those cruises are structured.
Bagan Questions
Do Bagan river cruises dock right at the temples?
Ships moor on the riverbank near Old Bagan or nearby villages, and guests reach the temple plain by short coach, horse-cart or e-bike rides. The temples are spread over a wide area, so you do not walk between them all.
Can you still climb Bagan temples?
Climbing on most temple terraces has been restricted for years to protect the monuments. Viewing mounds and a few designated spots are used for sunrise and sunset instead. Rules can change, so follow local guidance.
Is Bagan a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Yes. Bagan was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2019.
