Irrawaddy River Cruise Mandalay to Yangon: The Long Way South

An Irrawaddy river cruise from Mandalay to Yangon covers the full navigable middle and lower river, through the dry zone of central Burma and into the green delta country. It was always a smaller market than the Mandalay–Bagan run: longer (typically 10 to 14 nights), slower and aimed at travelers who wanted the river itself rather than a highlights tour.

Where things stand (October 2026): the U.S. State Department rates Burma (Myanmar) Level 4: Do Not Travel — its highest level — citing civil unrest and armed conflict, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, poor medical care and land mines (U.S. State Department Burma travel advisory, issued May 8, 2026). The large U.S.-market river lines are not selling the Mandalay–Bagan run, and Pandaw’s Irrawaddy sailing calendar showed no Rangoon–Mandalay departures when we checked. This site explains the route so you know what it involves; please read the advisory before you plan anything.

Pandaw has listed a 14-night Rangoon to Mandalay itinerary, but its calendar showed no departures when we checked in October 2026.

What Lies South of Bagan

StopWhat it is known for
SalayA former trading town with a 19th-century carved teak monastery and colonial-era buildings.
MagweA riverside regional town and the Mya Tha Lun pagoda on its bluff.
Minhla and ThayetmyoOld frontier forts and garrison towns from the era of the Anglo-Burmese wars.
Pyay (Prome)The gilded Shwesandaw pagoda and the nearby ruins of Sri Ksetra.
Danubyu and the delta townsRice country, river ports and the approach to Yangon by the Twante Canal or the main river.

Sri Ksetra, outside Pyay, is one of the three Pyu Ancient Cities inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 — brick stupas and city walls older than Bagan, rarely visited by anyone who has not come by river.

Yangon at the Southern End

Yangon (Rangoon) was the capital under British rule and until 2005. Its centerpiece is the Shwedagon Pagoda, a gold-covered stupa on a hill above the city that is the most sacred Buddhist site in the country. Downtown, colonial buildings stand along streets laid out in a grid near the river.

On the classic itineraries Yangon was either the start, with a flight north to Mandalay or Bagan to join the ship, or the end after disembarking in the delta or at Yangon’s river jetties.

Is an Irrawaddy River Cruise Mandalay to Yangon Right for You?

  • You prefer quiet days, river scenery and village stops to a dense sightseeing program.
  • You are comfortable with simple riverbank landings and limited connectivity.
  • You are not on a fixed timetable: low water can shorten or reroute long river sailings.

Travelers who like the idea but cannot go to Myanmar often enjoy a long Ganges itinerary between Kolkata and Varanasi, covered on Ganges River Cruises. Before any trip, River Cruising Safety has general river-cruise safety advice.
