The Classic Irrawaddy River Cruise: Mandalay to Bagan

An Irrawaddy river cruise from Mandalay to Bagan follows Burma’s great river between two of its royal capitals: Mandalay, the last seat of the Burmese kings, and Bagan, the plain of temples built between roughly the 11th and 13th centuries. It is the most-sailed stretch of the river, and the one most travelers mean when they talk about cruising in Myanmar.

This site is about the route itself — the towns, temples and river life between those two cities, and the longer journey south to Yangon. (You will see the river spelled Irrawaddy, Irawaddy or, officially, Ayeyarwady; they are the same river.) For ships and cruise lines in general, our live sister site Irrawaddy Cruises has the overview, and Asia River Cruises compares every major river in Asia.

Where things stand (October 2026): the U.S. State Department rates Burma (Myanmar) Level 4: Do Not Travel — its highest level — citing civil unrest and armed conflict, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, poor medical care and land mines (U.S. State Department Burma travel advisory, issued May 8, 2026). The large U.S.-market river lines are not selling the Mandalay–Bagan run, and Pandaw’s Irrawaddy sailing calendar showed no Rangoon–Mandalay departures when we checked. This site explains the route so you know what it involves; please read the advisory before you plan anything.

How an Irrawaddy River Cruise Mandalay to Bagan Works

The Mandalay–Bagan segment usually took three or four nights on the classic itineraries. Ships sailed downstream from Mandalay to Bagan or upstream in the other direction, and the two directions felt different: going down, the current carries you and the days end at Bagan’s temples; going up, Bagan comes first and Mandalay’s monasteries close the trip.

The river is wide, braided and shallow in the dry months. Pilots read the shifting sandbanks by eye, and ships tie up at riverbanks rather than at quays — often a plank and a short walk up the bank. That is part of the charm, and also why this stretch suits small ships with shallow drafts.

Seasons and water levels

The cruising season on the middle Irrawaddy has traditionally run from about September to April, after the monsoon has filled the river and before the hottest weeks. The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable for temple walks. Late in the dry season the water drops, sandbars appear and some ships shortened routes or moved passengers by coach for a section. Any operator will tell you its own season; treat these as general patterns, not a schedule.

The Towns In Between

What separates an Irrawaddy river cruise from a flight between Mandalay and Bagan is the in-between: river villages and monastery towns that see few visitors. On the classic itineraries these included Yandabo, a pottery village where the 1826 treaty ending the First Anglo-Burmese War was signed; Pakokku, a market town near the mouth of the Chindwin; and, on longer routes, Salay with its carved teak monastery. Upstream of Mandalay, the old royal sites of Sagaing, Ava (Inwa) and Mingun sit within a short boat ride of each other. Our river towns page covers them, including how the March 2025 earthquake affected the Mandalay–Sagaing area.

  • Morning walks through villages where pottery, weaving or palm-sugar making goes on beside the houses.
  • Monastery visits — shoes off at the entrance, shoulders and knees covered.
  • Sunset on deck with sandbanks, fishing boats and gold stupas on the ridgelines.
  • Short land excursions by horse cart, trishaw or coach to sites set back from the bank.

The Ship With the Famous Name

For a generation, the best-known vessel on this route was the Road to Mandalay, a former Rhine ship rebuilt for the Irrawaddy in the 1990s. Its story — and why travelers still search for a “road to Mandalay river cruise” — says a lot about how cruising in Burma has risen and fallen with the country’s politics.

If You Want a Temple-and-River Journey Now

If the advisory rules Myanmar out for you, the closest experience is a Mekong cruise between Vietnam and Cambodia, ending near the temples of Angkor (see Mekong River Boat Cruises), or a Ganges cruise from Kolkata past Bengal’s terracotta temples (see Ganges River Cruises). Both are sold by mainstream river lines, with regular departures.

Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can compare ships and dates for you. River lines and ships for every region are also listed in the Official River Cruise Directory, and ocean voyages calling in Asia are in the Official Cruise Directory.

Mandalay to Bagan Questions

How long is an Irrawaddy river cruise Mandalay to Bagan itinerary?

On the classic itineraries, three or four nights in either direction, often as part of a longer land-and-river trip. Longer cruises continued south toward Yangon.

Can I book a Mandalay to Bagan river cruise right now?

The big U.S.-market river lines are not selling it, and the State Department rates Burma Level 4: Do Not Travel. Check the advisory first, and ask us about the Mekong or Ganges if you want a similar journey.

Is it Irrawaddy, Irawaddy or Ayeyarwady?

All three. Ayeyarwady is the official romanization used in Myanmar today; Irrawaddy is the long-standing English spelling; Irawaddy is a common variant.
